WARNING: I'm not responsible for any mental or physical damage caused by this patcher or the patched Marathon application.
Use this at your own risk!
How to use this patcher
Just Drag and Drop Marathon Application itself onto this patcher. If the icon is not highlighted when the application is dragged on to it, first try Stuffing this patcher once and then Unstuffing it. If that still does not work, try rebuilding your desktop by holding down cmd+opt after restarting. Once the program launches, the dialog shown below will appear, if you drag and drop Marathon 2. Select the desired patches, then hit "Patch!". After a few seconds, the dialog will disappear and you will find the new patched version of the Marathon application near the original.
Notes
• The default output file name , i.e. patched Marathon application's name, is the original application's name + "patch". But you can edit this in a TextEdit box in the usual way.
• If another file with the same name as the patch's exists, the patcher will not write the patched application.
• If you want the patched Marathon to be FAT, i.e. if you want to patch both forks, the patch must be applied twice.
• This patcher knows Marathon version 1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.2J (Japanese localized version). And of course Marathon 2 version 1.0. If you use this patcher for Marathon 1, a similar dialog will appear (but for Marathon 1). It includes all of the features previously seen in MUP 1.0.
• The default shield boost value is 450 (3x) in Marathon 1 and 300 (2x) in Marathon 2. Who decided? Miha did. But you can change this if you like. The default number of magazines is 15.
I want your feedback!
This is freeware, so you may distribute it freely as long as this document and the "Read Me Durandal!" document accompany the Application. But I want your comments and suggestions, because that's what keeps the program alive and working. Also, if you have any funny or amazing Saved Game Files (you can save at anywhere by using Save Game patch) or Films (like Miha), please let me see them too, with a brief description about what's cool. If you send them to me, I'll also post them on some public ftp sites such as ftp.amug.org.
Additional Information
Michio Hashimoto (a.k.a. Miha) is the Marathon Master who finished Marathon 1 on the "Total Carnage" level in March '95. He then proceeded to record films for all 27 levels of Marathon at the most difficult level. And he did it. His films are stored at various public ftp sites such as ftp.amug.org. MUP 1.0 has the option in the patcher to let you view all of these films from start to finish. MUP 2.1 (this patcher) includes all the feature of MUP 1.0. So you can apply mp patch, if you drag and drop Marathon 1 on this patcher. He has also accomplished the same feat for Marathon 2, including the infamous Level 14. These, too, are posted on amug. Check it out!
In the end, I want to thank again John DeWeese (jdeweese@sytex.net) for his great help to prepare this document and Nobuhiko Yoshida (too many e-mail addresses to mention) for his advise to make such a variable patcher.
